Store-bought sprays, foams, and bait stakes are cheap and tempting — but for an established termite colony, here's the honest answer on whether they work.
It's a reasonable instinct: you find termites, you go to the hardware store, and there's a whole shelf of sprays, foams, and bait stakes promising to handle it for a fraction of what a professional charges. So does any of it actually work? The honest answer is that DIY has a small legitimate role in prevention — and essentially no role in treating an established colony. Here's the distinction that matters.
Why DIY Fails on an Established Colony
The core problem is reach. A termite colony lives sealed inside the wood (drywood) or underground and inside mud tubes (subterranean). The part you can see — a few swarmers, a kickout hole, some frass — is a symptom, not the colony. Store products only treat the surface or the spot you can access, while the colony continues working in the wood you can't reach.

What the DIY Products Actually Are

None of these can do what a professional treatment does: reach the entire colony, whether that's whole-structure fumigation, a heat cycle, or a correctly installed soil barrier.
The Hidden Cost of DIY
The real danger of DIY isn't just that it doesn't work — it's that it feels like it did. You spray, the visible activity stops for a while, and you assume it's handled. Meanwhile the colony keeps feeding, and the damage keeps compounding. The months or years you spend thinking a problem is solved are exactly when a small, cheap-to-treat infestation becomes a large, expensive one. Where DIY Does Have a Role: Prevention
Here's the fair part. There are genuinely useful things a homeowner can do — but they're about *prevention and conditions*, not killing a colony:
- Fix leaks and drainage so wood stays dry (subterranean termites need moisture).
- Keep wood away from soil — move firewood, mulch, and stored lumber off the ground and away from the foundation.
- Seal cracks and gaps where you can.
- Keep an eye out for the early warning signs so you catch activity early.
These reduce your risk. They don't treat an active infestation.
The Honest Bottom Line
For prevention and keeping conditions unfavorable: DIY is worth doing. For an active, established colony: store products don't reach it, and treating the symptom while the colony works is the most expensive kind of "savings."
