Termites in Attic Framing — Treatment Options for Attic Infestations
Attic framing is the most common location for drywood termite infestations throughout Southern California. The combination of dry, warm conditions and abundant untreated wood makes attics prime termite habitat. Here's what to expect.
Drywood termites thrive in attic framing for several reasons: wood is often older and untreated, the attic environment is warm and protected, and swarmers enter through ridge vents, soffit vents, and any small gap in the roofline.
Signs of attic termite activity: frass accumulation on attic floor insulation, kickout holes in rafters and collar ties, hollow-sounding framing members, and visible galleries when damaged wood is examined.
Treatment options for attic infestations depend on the extent of activity. Localized infestation in one or two members: orange oil injection or spot treatment ($500–$1,500). Widespread infestation across multiple attic framing members: tent fumigation ($1,500–$4,000) or heat treatment ($1,200–$3,000) — both achieve whole-structure coverage.
Heat treatment is particularly effective for attic infestations because attics heat up rapidly and the treatment can be completed in one day with same-day return. Fumigation provides 100% whole-structure coverage including areas heat treatment may not fully reach in very large attics.

Can I treat attic termites myself?
Store-bought sprays and borax treatments are not effective for established drywood termite colonies in attic framing. Licensed injection, fumigation, or heat treatment is required to access deep gallery systems.
Do I need to re-insulate after attic fumigation or heat treatment?
No — fumigation and heat treatment do not damage attic insulation. You may want to have frass cleared from insulation surfaces after treatment for cleanliness, but replacement is typically not required.
How often should I have my attic inspected for termites?
Annual inspections are recommended for all Southern California homes. Attic inspections are included in our standard whole-structure inspection — if you haven't had your attic inspected recently, schedule a free inspection.
