Termite Treatment and Pets — Safety Guide for Dog and Cat Owners
Protecting your home from termites while keeping your pets safe is entirely possible. Here's a clear breakdown of which treatments require pets to leave, for how long, and what to do with each.
Tent fumigation (Vikane gas): all pets must leave during fumigation and may not return until clearance is confirmed — typically 72 hours. Fish tanks must be sealed and air pumps disconnected. After aeration and clearance, there is no chemical residue and all pets can return safely.
Heat treatment: all pets must leave during treatment (6–8 hours). No chemical residue after ventilation. Pets return the same day once the home cools to normal temperature.
Orange oil treatment: pets can stay in unaffected areas of the home during treatment. The treatment area should be ventilated during injection, but the citrus-based material is non-toxic to mammals. Most homeowners simply keep pets in a different room.
Termidor soil treatment (subterranean): all work is performed outside in the soil around the foundation. No interior exposure. Pets can remain in the home throughout treatment and can access the yard once the soil is dry — typically within a few hours.
Spot drywood treatment: similar to orange oil — treated areas should be avoided during application, but no whole-home evacuation is required. Pets in adjacent rooms are unaffected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do fish tanks need special treatment during fumigation?
Yes — fish and their tanks must be treated carefully during tent fumigation. Fish can remain in the tank if the air pump is disconnected and the tank is sealed with plastic sheeting during treatment. Consult with your inspector for your specific aquarium setup.
When can my pets return after fumigation?
After tent fumigation, pets may return once clearance is confirmed — typically 72 hours after tenting begins. The inspector verifies safe gas levels with a clearance meter before you or your pets return.
Is Termidor safe around pets?
Termidor is applied in the soil outside the home. Once the treatment area is dry (typically 2–4 hours), pets can access the yard. Keep pets away from wet treated soil during application. There is no indoor exposure.
