DIY Termite Treatment Failed? Here's Why — and What Actually Works

Store-bought termite sprays, borax treatments, and hardware store "termite killers" are almost never effective against established termite colonies. Here's why — and what professional treatment accomplishes that DIY cannot.

Drywood termite colonies live deep inside wood galleries — typically 2–6 inches below the wood surface. Surface sprays and liquid treatments applied to the outside of wood simply don't reach the colony. The termites continue feeding and reproducing in the gallery while surface treatment has no effect.

Subterranean termite colonies live in the soil, potentially several feet below ground. Store-bought soil treatments don't penetrate deeply enough or provide the continuous treatment zone around the foundation perimeter that Termidor creates.

Borax (boric acid) treatments have limited efficacy for established colonies. While borax is toxic to termites on contact, getting borax to a colony inside wood or soil requires direct injection — the same approach professional orange oil treatment uses, but with a professional-grade delivery system.

Signs that DIY treatment has failed: continued frass accumulation after treatment, new swarmer emergence, continued hollow-sounding wood spread, or mud tube rebuilding after removal. Any of these signs indicate the colony remains active.

Professional treatment advantages: direct gallery injection with professional-grade materials, Termidor soil treatment that creates a continuous colony-transfer barrier, heat and fumigation options that penetrate all structural members — none of which are available in consumer products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why didn't the store-bought treatment work?

Consumer termite products are primarily contact killers that address the termites you can see — swarmers on the surface. The established colony inside the wood or soil is out of reach of surface applications. Professional treatment accesses the colony directly.

How do I know if professional treatment is working?

After orange oil or spot treatment: no new frass in treated areas within 30 days. After Termidor soil treatment: mud tube activity stops within 90 days as the colony is eliminated. After fumigation: immediate whole-structure clearance, no new swarmer activity. Your inspector explains what to monitor.
