The sill plate — the wood member that sits directly on top of the foundation stem wall — is the most termite-vulnerable structural element in a raised foundation home. It's the first wood that subterranean termites contact when traveling up from the soil, and it's also susceptible to drywood infestation when swarmers enter the crawl space.

Floor joists spanning the crawl space are the second major inspection priority. Subterranean termites can build mud tube highways from the soil to the sill plate and along floor joists, consuming them from below while leaving the finish floor largely undisturbed above.
